• Empowering Youth via Africa Yoga Project

6 years ago, I embarked on a journey of making a change in my own wellbeing – contentment, health, and happiness.  Since then, yoga has been one of my wellbeing tools that helped me accept my limitations, recognize my strengths, and let go of my frustrations. Yoga gives me a more positive outlook while facing the unpredictability of life. Being an ambassador of Africa Yoga Project (AYP) gives me the opportunity to share yoga as a wellbeing tool with others, while giving back to the communities. Africa Yoga Project (AYP), based in Nairobi, has done an amazing job across Africa and its mission is to empower youth to step into their greatness as global wellbeing leaders and build…

  • How I changed my wellbeing

I decided to make a change in my own wellbeing, while I was on a trip in Italy in 2012 and in between jobs. If you had asked me 6 years ago what wellbeing looked like, I would have described an image of a confident woman or man, who looked well-built and active, with a big smile on her or his face at all time.  And, that was an image many New Yorkers, including myself, were chasing.  Fast-forward to today, if you ask me the same question regarding wellbeing, I would certainly describe a woman or man, regardless her or his body shape and size, who feels comfortable, healthy, and…

  • Yoga Sequence On-The-Go

Whenever I am not traveling and working in Dubai, I practice Mysore 1 to 2 times a week at Ashtanga Yoga Dubai studio.  Mysore is very personal and special to me.  I practice at my own speed along with other yogis in the same space, and with senior teachers adjusting my form, I can go deeper and calmer in each pose (asanas). Being a vinyasa yoga teacher, keeping myself motivated to practice yoga constantly has been a learning journey, and to be honest, it isn’t easy. After months of searching and “crowd-sourcing”, I was finally able to have the right formula to keep my morning practice consistent while on the…

  • Creating a yoga practice space while traveling

Since last year, I have been spending 50% of my time traveling for work.  Packing a week’s worth of daily necessities in a carry-on suitcase has become one of my super skills.  I am able to de-clutter my mind and sense happiness, with just the right travel yoga essentials by my side. One-third of my carry-on suitcase is now my yoga travel kit, Yogo yoga mat: the most compact yoga mat I have ever had.  The environmentally-conscious yoga mat folds up like a newspaper and is made of 100% recycled material. Yoga Buckle Strap: this cotton strap comes in handy, especially after a long flight. I use the strap to…

  • Turning 38 … #ShareTheJoy

I turned 38 this October.  Being in my late 30’s is exciting to me, but yet anxious (2 more years and counting, pushing for 40’s).  I am thankful and grateful for so many things in my life, including my loved ones and friends.  However, as a human being, I often look at things I haven’t accomplished yet, personally and professionally. For my 38th birthday, my husband and I went to India for the first time, and stayed at a remote yoga and meditation eco-resort in Kerala, India. Reconnecting our souls to our minds and bodies, I enjoyed the daily discipline – 4 hours of yoga, meditation, and vegetarian meals.  Every day at…

  • 10-Minute Yoga to Reduce Workplace Stress

Every January, major magazines throughout the world publish stress-related articles with good intentions.  Often, they try to empathize the importance of well-being, and heavy costs that U.S. corporations are paying to address employees’ stress at work.  In 2015, Forbes estimated workplace stress are costing up to $190B in annual U.S. healthcare spending, because stress could lead to trouble with sleeping, headaches, and other health issues. At the mixed-level vinyasa yoga class I teach, I often target poses that help my students to relieve stress and re-align their spines.  In traditional yoga perspectives, stress can be reduced by slower-breathing and chest-opening poses that calm minds and stretch lungs. If you are feeling anxious or…
